General description

Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) is a polar solvent. DMSO activated by electrophile (oxalyl chloride) has been used to oxidize various alcohols (primary, secondary, allylic, benzylic, hindered and bicyclic). Carbonyl compounds are formed as reaction products. It has been proposed as an alternate solvent for methyl cellosolve for use in ninhydrin reaction, due to its high stability.

Application


  • Ternary Phase-Field Simulation of Poly(vinylidene fluoride) Microporous Membrane Structures: Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) is utilized in the formation of microporous membrane structures through phase separation techniques, enhancing polymer research for filtration and barrier applications (Zhang Z, et al., 2024).

  • Application of copper (I) selective ligands for PET imaging: DMSO is employed in the synthesis of copper (I) selective ligands for positron emission tomography (PET) imaging, illustrating its role in advancing diagnostic techniques in medical research (Tada T, et al., 2024).

  • Pillared graphene oxide frameworks for adsorption and separation: Research highlights the use of DMSO in exploring solvent interactions within graphene oxide frameworks, aiming to improve industrial processes for solvent recovery and environmental cleanup (Skarmoutsos I, et al., 2024).

  • A Luminescent Hybrid Bimetallic Halide Family with Solvent-Coordinated Rare Earth and Alkaline Earth Metals: This study utilizes DMSO in the development of new luminescent materials, showcasing its importance in the creation of advanced materials for lighting and display technologies (Lin J, et al., 2024).

Caution

Supercools easily and remelts slowly at room temperature. Solidified product can be re-liquified by warming to room temperature without detriment to the product.
