Application

Red phosphorus can be used as a:
  • Photocatalyst for the formation of H2 from water.
  • Catalyst in the synthesis of tris(2-pyridyl)phosphine by reacting with 2-bromopyridine in the presence of a base.
  • Flame retardant along with aluminum oxide in recycled poly(ethylene terephthalate).
  • Anode material in combination with carbon composites for sodium-ion batteries.

General description

Red phosphorus is the most common allotrope of phosphorus due to its relative stability compared to white phosphorus. It has a variety of uses including, but not limited to, use as a catalyst, battery anode, flame retardant, and igniter.
