General description

Calcium (Ca2+) play a vital role in the physiology and biochemistry of the cell. Calcium ions play an important role in signal transduction pathways, neurotransmitter release from neurons, contraction of all muscle cell types, and in fertilization. Extracellular calcium is also important for maintaining the potential difference across excitable cell membranes, as well as proper bone formation.

The BioTracker 609 Red Ca2+ AM Dye is a live cell red fluorescent calcium indicator. Fluorescence intensity of this fluorescent probe reversibly changes depending on Ca2+ concentration. It has red fluorescence with maximum emission at 609 nm (Excitation 590nm) and is suitable for detection of micromolar- to submicromolar-range calcium ions. The dye is hydrolyzed by intracellular esterases to become soluble which equally distributes in the cytoplasm. This feature enables detection of intracellular calcium concentration changes with superior accuracy compared to other calcium indicators.
