General description
HOG is a clonal cell line derived from a surgically removed human oligodendroglioma (HOG) . HOG cells express oligodendrocyte markers including low levels of the 15-kDa form of myelin basic protein (MBP) and high levels of CNPase protein. HOG cells do not express GFAP, a astrocyte marker and were found to have minimal levels of glutamine synthetase activity . HOG cells express neurotransmitter receptors such as A2-adenosine, prostaglandin E1 (PGE1) and beta2-adrenergic receptores (beta-ARs) that activate the adenylate cylase signaling pathway . HOG cells also express muscarinic and histamine receptors that are linked to inositol phosphate signaling pathways .
Preparation Note
Store in liquid nitrogen. The cells can be cultured for at least 10 passages after initial thawing without significantly affecting the cell marker expression and functionality.

Moderate therapeutic hypothermia is protective against several cellular stressors. However, the mechanisms behind this protection are not entirely known. In the current investigation, we investigated that therapeutic hypothermia at 33°C administered following peroxide-induced oxidative stress might protect human oligodendroglioma cells

Oligodendrocytes, the myelin-forming cells of the central nervous system, are the target of pathogenic immune responses in multiple sclerosis. Primary cultures of human oligodendrocytes have been used to unravel the cellular and molecular mechanisms of immune-mediated injury of oligodendrocytes. However

Glia have been implicated in Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathogenesis. Variants of the microglia receptor triggering receptor expressed on myeloid cells 2 (TREM2) increase AD risk, and activation of disease-associated microglia (DAM) is dependent on TREM2 in mouse models of AD.
