Cytokines are small proteins secreted by immune cells that regulate immune responses, hematopoiesis, and lymphocyte development, including interleukins, interferons, and chemokines. Growth factors, which promote cell growth and proliferation, share structural and functional similarities with cytokines and act through specific receptors on target cells. Unlike hormones produced by specialized glands, both cytokines and growth factors can be secreted by various cell types, and their tightly regulated expression is crucial; dysregulation can lead to diseases such as infections, autoimmune disorders, and cancer.
