General description

Human Aromatase is a membrane-bound enzyme that is localized on the endoplasmic reticulum. While it is found in gonads and adrenal glands where it converts androgens into estrogens in a classical endocrine manner, it is also expressed in various tissues where it regulates local estrogen levels or estrogen/androgen ratios in an intracrine manner. Human Aromatase is known to have two major forms, characterized by one amino acid difference at amino acid position 264 [arginine (264R) and cysteine (264C)]. Abnormal Aromatase hyperactivity is a known cause for Aromatase excess syndrome (AES), which is characterized by excess levels of estrogen, heterosexual precocity in adolescent males and isosexual precocity in adolescent females. On the other hand, Aromatase deficiency (AROD) in Aromatase-deficient (ArKO) mice leads to increased adiposity, an inability to synthesize estrogen, birth defects, and genital-related developmental disorders. It is also reported to play a role in a complex immune-neuro-endocrine network management system in murine cysticercosis.

Specificity

Other homolgoies: Rat and Mouse (94% sequence homology).

Immunogen

KLH-conjugated linear peptide corresponding to human Aromatase.

Application
