Gene Information
human ... RAD51(5888)
General description
RAD51 is essential for homologous recombination of DNA during repair of double-strand breaks. The N-terminus of RAD51 functions to bind DNA and promote homologous pairing and strand exchange within a regular nucleoprotein filament. In yeast, the Rad51 family of related proteins also includes Rad55, Rad57, and Dmc1. In mammalian cells, seven genes in this family have been identified (HsRAD51, XRCC2, XRCC3, RAD51B/hREC2 and HsDMC1, RAD51C, and RAD51D). RAD51 is predominantly expressed in the testis and thymus but can also be found in the small intestine, placenta, colon, pancreas and ovaries.
Specificity
Other homologies: Bovine, Equine, and Canine (99% sequence homology).
Immunogen
Histidine-tagged recombinant protein corresponding to human RAD51.
Application

The underlying mechanism behind age-induced wastage of the human ovarian follicle reserve is unknown. We identify impaired ATM (ataxia-telangiectasia mutated)-mediated DNA double-strand break (DSB) repair as a cause of aging in mouse and human oocytes. We show that DSBs accumulate

Genomic instability through deregulation of DNA repair pathways can initiate cancer and subsequently result in resistance to chemo and radiotherapy. Understanding these biological mechanisms is therefore essential to overcome cancer. RAD51 is the central protein of the Homologous Recombination (HR)

At high exposure levels ionizing radiation is a carcinogen. Little is known about how human stem cells, which are known to contribute to tumorigenesis, respond to prolonged radiation exposures. We studied formation of DNA double strand breaks, accessed as γH2AX

Ionizing radiation (IR) elevates mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) in response to the energy requirement for DNA damage responses. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) released during mitochondrial OXPHOS may cause oxidative damage to mitochondria in irradiated cells. In this paper, we investigated

The production of haploid gametes by meiosis is a cornerstone of sexual reproduction and maintenance of genome integrity. Zfp38 mRNA is expressed in spermatocytes, indicating that transcription factor ZFP38 has the potential to regulate transcription during meiosis. In this study
