Gene Information

General description
Sodium-Iodide Sympoter (Uniprot: Q63008; also known as NIS, Sodium/iodide cotransporter, Na(+)/I(-) cotransporter, Sodium-iodide symporter, Na(+)/I(-) symporter, Solute carrier family 5 member 5) is encoded by the Scl5a5 (also known as Nis) gene (Gene ID: 114613) in rat. NIS is a multi-pass membrane protein that is involved in the transport of iodide in thyroid gland. It is highly expressed in thyroid epithelial cells and lower levels of expression are also reported in mammary gland, salivary gland, stomach and colon. The presence of symporter in mammary glands leads to secretion of iodine in milk that is required for thyroid function in neonatal animals. Nis gene and protein expression is stimulated by thyroid-stimulating hormone. Both human and rat NIS contain N-glycosylation sites, however, glycosylation is not required for its full activity. Abnormalities in the expression of Nis gene lead to thyroid disease and can result in congenital hypothyroidism. Autoantibodies to NIS adversely affect iodide transport.
Specificity
This polyclonal antibody detects sodium/iodide co-transporter in rat thyroid gland. It targets an epitope within 16 amino acids from the C-terminus region.
Immunogen
Epitope: C-terminus
KLH-conjugated liner peptide corresponding to 16 amino acids from the C-termnus region of rat Sodium/iodide cotransporter.
Application
Anti-Sodium-Iodine Symporter (NIS) C-term, Cat. No. ABC1453, is a rabbit polyclonal antibody that detects Sodium/iodide cotransporter and has been tested for use in Immunocytochemistry, Immunohistochemistry, Immunoprecipitation, and Western Blotting.
