General description

1-Hexene is a linear alpha-olefin, which carries a double bond at the alpha position. It is a widely used raw material in the production of synthetic rubbers, elastomers, plasticizers, mercaptans, fatty acids, and synthetic resins. 1-Hexene is also used as a solvent in paints, printing inks, resins, and waxes.

Application

1-Hexene can be used as:
  • A monomer in the production of polyhexene-1 (PHe) elastomer material via metal-catalyzed homopolymerization reaction. This elastomeric material can be further utilized in the modification of plastic and rubber products.
  • A comonomer in the manufacture of polyethylenes such as linear low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and high-density polyethylene (HDPE). These materials are widely used in everyday products such as plastic bags, packaging films, agricultural films, and containers.
  • A solvent in the separation of olefins and paraffins.

It can also be used in copolymerization reactions along with 1-butylene or propylene to synthesize thermoplastic copolymers to increase the impact strength, elongation at break, density, and melt flow index and to impart good stiffness-flexibility balance.
