General description
A low molecular weight non-glycosylated basic protein of the cystatin superfamily of cysteine protease inhibitors that is freely filtered by the glomerular membrane. Serum levels of cystatin C can be used as a specific and sensitive marker of glomerular filtration rate. Protects organisms against undesirable proteolysis by endogenous or exogenous enzymes. Rapidly and tightly inhibits papain (Ki = 0.26 nM) and cathepsin B (Ki = 4.4 nM). Thought to be linked to many disease processes including Alzheimer′s Disease, hereditary cerebral hemorrhage and lung cancer.

Neuronal cell culture models have been used to demonstrate the protective effects of cystatin C against a variety of insults, including the toxicity induced by oligomeric and fibrillar amyloid β (Aβ). Here, we describe assays quantifying cystatin C protective effects
