General description
A metal ion chelator that crosses the blood brain barrier and acts as a neurotoxic antibiotic. Reported to dissolve senile plaques and reduce amyloid’s ability to clump together, apparently by trapping the Cu2+ and Zn2+ that stud these deposits. Shown to increase distal dominant axonopathy in animal models.
A metal ion chelator that crosses the blood-brain barrier and acts as a neurotoxic antibiotic. Reported to dissolve senile plaques and reduce amyloid′s ability to clump together, apparently by trapping the Cu2+ and Zn2+ that reduces the build-up of these deposits. Exhibits greater affinity for Cu2+ and Zn2+ than for Ca2+ and Mg2+. Shown to induce distal dominant axonopathy in animal models. Clioquinol treatment has been shown to be beneficial in a mouse model of Alzheimer′s disease.
