General description

A retinoid X receptor (RXR) agonist that can permeate the blood-brain barrier and rapidly reduce Aβ40 and Aβ42 levels in APP/PS1 mice in an ApoE-dependent manner (25% reduction in 6 h and 50% reduction in 72 h). Causes a rapid reversal of cognitive, social, and olfactory deficts. Shown to progressively enhance the expression of ApoE and ATP-binding cassette transporters ABCA1 and ABCG1. Also stimulates the secretion of highly lapidated HDL particles in primary microglia and astrocytes. Does not affect the levels of Aβ proteases, insulin degrading enzyme, and neprilysin.
