General description

A cell-permeable furancarboxylic acid compound that activates celular AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) activity by inhibiting mitochondrial complex I, and thus elevating intracellular AMP level. Shown to enhance glucose uptake in L6 myocytes (EC50 = 11.7 µM). Reduces blood glucose levels in ZDF rats in vivo (oral dose 30-100 mg/kg). Displays negligible cytotoxicity at pharmacological doses.
