General description

Violet Red Bile Dextrose Agar is a granulated selective medium recommended for detection and enumeration of Enterobacteriaceae, especially the bile tolerant gram-negative bacteria from non-sterile products and pharmaceutical preparations. The granules ensure rapid and uniform dissolution in water, prevent clumping of the medium, and inhalation of the airborne powder. Pancreatic digest of gelatin and yeast extract provide nitrogenous compounds and other nutrients essential for bacterial metabolism. This media is selective due to the presence of the inhibitors, bile salts, and crystal violet. Crystal violet inhibits gram-positive organisms. The neutral red indicator helps to detect dextrose fermentation. Dextrose fermenting strains produce red colonies with pink-red halos in the presence of neutral red. Sodium chloride maintains the osmotic equilibrium in the medium.

Application

Violet Red Bile Dextrose Agar is recommended for the detection and enumeration of Enterobacteriaceae from pharmaceutical products.

Footnote

We offer two media types: the superior granulated GranuCult® and the cost-efficient powdered NutriSelect® culture media, depending on your needs.
The designations basic, plus, or prime are added to indicate the quality control level, from basic quality control to standard QC plus to prime for full regulatory compliance.
