Application
Currently, titanium and its alloys are widely used in implant dentistry. But they pose challenges such as potential immunologic response and its dark grayish color which affects the esthetics. The natural white color, mechanical properties, higher osseointegration, and biocompatibility of ZrO2 make it an ideal candidate as a dental biomaterial for implants and crowns compared to titanium-based systems.
The doping of ZrO2 with Ce4+ ions makes it photosensitive to visible light leading to the formation of a 3rd generation photoactive system with potential applications in photocatalysis.

General description
Zirconium oxide (ZrO2) is a metal oxide with mechanical strength similar to steel hence referred to as ceramic steel. Some of its other properties include high biocompatibility, chemical inertness, resistance to corrosion, high dielectric constant, large bandgap, and high thermal resistance. Pure zirconia is susceptible to fracture due to phase transformation at elevated temperature which can be overcome by adding stabilizers such as yttria to form yttrium-stabilized zirconia or yttria tetragonal zirconia polycrystals.
