General description

Neurotensin (NT), a 13-amino acid peptide neurotransmitter encoded by the NTS gene. NT is located in the gastrointestinal tract and heterogeneously distributed in the mammalian central nervous system, and has many neurotransmitter-like characteristics. It influences various central and peripheral functions by interacting with three neurotensin receptors. It is linked to the modulation of dopaminergic systems and in the induction of changes in behavior, muscle relaxation, nociception, and hypothermia, as well as appetite, learning, memory, and fat metabolism. Moreover, it is a modulator of noradrenergic activity. It also acts as an endogenous anti-psychotic compound and lowers blood pressure, increases vascular permeability, and increases plasma levels of glucagon, glucose, growth hormone, and prolactin in rats. Additionally, it regulates the release of pituitary hormones from the brain and insulin, glucagon, and somatostatin from the gut.

Neurotensin is a tridecapeptide originally isolated and characterized from bovine hypothalamus and later, in identical form, from bovine and human intestine. In the rat about 85% of immunoreactive neurotensin is found in the gut and about 10% in the brain.

Neurotensin is an endogenous tridecapeptide that can be found in both central and peripheral nervous systems. Under normal physiological conditions, neurotensin is involved in the regulation of pain, body temperature, physical activity, appetite as well as learning and memory. In
