General description

16:0-18:1 Diether PE or 1-O-hexadecanyl-2-O-(9Z-octadecenyl)-sn-glycero-3-phosphoethanolamine is a class of glycerophospholipids that have hexadecane and octadecene chains attached to the sn-1 and sn-2 positions of the glycerol backbone respectively by ether bonds. It has ethanolamine as the alcohol moiety, attached to the phosphate group.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Certain important signaling molecules are derived from ether linked phospholipids, which act as precursors. 20 percent of the total phospholipids in human are ether linked phospholipids. Inborn errors hindering the synthesis of ether phospholipids might lead to pathological conditions. Phosphoethanolamines (PEs) serve as a substrate for several phospholipids of the cell membrane. They are associated with the phospholipid turnover. PEs are also found to prevent tumor progression.

Ether lipids, such as plasmalogens, are peroxisome-derived glycerophospholipids in which the hydrocarbon chain at the sn-1 position of the glycerol backbone is attached by an ether bond, as opposed to an ester bond in the more common diacyl phospholipids. This
