General description

03:0 Coenzyme A, also known as propanoyl coenzyme A, is a coenzyme A derivative of propionic acid. It is a catabolite of the amino acids isoleucine, valine, methionine, and threonine.

Biochem/physiol Actions

03:0 Coenzyme A acts as a substrate for methyl citrate synthase (PrpC), an important enzyme involved in tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle. It is a metabolic intermediate in the 1,2-propanediol and propionate degradation pathway of Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium LT2. Accumulation of propanoyl coenzyme A due to the deficiency of propionyl-coenzyme A (CoA) carboxylase causes propionic acidemia (PA).

Organic acids (OAs) are intermediary products of several amino acid catabolism or degradation via multiple biochemical pathways for energy production. Vitamins or co-factors are often quintessential elements in such degradation pathways and OA metabolism. OAs that result from enzyme defects

The studies reported here identify propionyl coenzyme A (propionyl-CoA) as the common intermediate in the 1,2-propanediol and propionate catabolic pathways of Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium LT2. Growth on 1,2-propanediol as a carbon and energy source led to the formation and
