General description

Gangliosides are glycosphingolipids, that contain sialic acid residues in the glycan chain. They are mainly present on the surface of neuronal cells. Gangliosides are also present in serum. Four complex ganglioside structures, such as GM1, GD1a, GD1b and GT1b are the most abundantly found ganglioside in mammalian brains. Gangliosides comprise a ceramide tail attached to a polar carbohydrate head.

Application

Ganglioside-Total may be used:
  • as a standard to investigate the efficiency of ganglioside extraction in brain using electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry (ESI MS) analysis
  • as a hemagglutinin (HA) binding receptor to assemble nanodisc with affinity to influenza virus (NDTG) and also to determine the effect of total ganglioside extract (TG) amount on total ganglioside
  • in liposomes to measure ostreolysin A (OlyA) binding in order to deduce the effects of phosphatidylcholines (PCs) on sphingomyelin

Biochem/physiol Actions

Gangliosides regulate various biological activities in cell plasma membranes (PMs). It provides structural rigidity to the cell. Ganglioside clusters form membrane microdomains, which facilitates cell adhesion. It also functions as differentiating markers during oncogenesis, embryogenesis, lymphoid differentiation and neoplastic transformation. Gangliosides have the ability to repress cell-mediated immune functions. It is also associated with cancer and Alzheimer′s disease.

Ginseng has a long history of use as a tonic for restoration of vigor. One example of ginseng-derived tonic effect is that it can improve physical stamina under conditions of stress. However, the active ingredient and the underlying molecular mechanism

Gangliosides are sialic acid-containing glycosphingolipids. They occur especially on the cellular surfaces of neuronal cells, where they form a complex pattern, but are also found in many other cell types. The paper provides a general overview on their structures, occurrence

Scaffolding proteins play important roles in supporting the plasma membrane (sarcolemma) of muscle cells. Among them, dystrophin strengthens the sarcolemma through protein-lipid interactions, and its absence due to gene mutations leads to the severe Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Most of the
