General description

Phosphatidylethanolamine is an aminophospholipid. It is present in eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells.[1] Phosphatidylethanolamine is one of the most abundant glycerophospholipids in biological membranes.[2] It is found in nervous tissue.[3]

Application

16:0 PE has been used:
  • for the preparation of perfluorocarbon (PFC) nanoparticles[4]
  • for lipid binding by liposome flotation assays[5]
  • to characterize the metabolic fate of synaptamide in a dopaminergic cell line[6]

Biochem/physiol Actions

Phosphatidylethanolamine forms pure lipid structures.[7] It plays a vital role in autophagy, cell division and protein folding. Phosphatidylethanolamine functions as a precursor for the synthesis of various protein modifications.[2] It controls membrane fluidity in eukaryotic cells.[8] Phosphatidylethanolamine behaves as an intermediate for the synthesis of glycerophospholipid classes.[2]
