General description

Phosphatidylserine (PS), an acidic phospholipid is obtained from soybeans (soy-PS), bovine cortex (BC-PS) and synthetic derivation. It is mainly seen in animals, higher plants and microorganisms. It is localized in the inner leaflet of the plasma membrane.

Application

08:0 PS may be used as control anionic lipid to treat Xenopus eggs to study its effects on the fertilization events. It has also been used to form mixed micelles to study or compare the micellization behavior of mixed zwitterionic/cationic solutions and cationic gemini surfactants with that of 08:0 PS.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Phosphatidylserine (PS) can activate protein kinase C. It aids in removing apoptotic cells and also participates in platelet aggregation.

We report a new step in the fertilization in Xenopus laevis which has been found to involve activation of Src tyrosine kinase to stimulate phospholipase C-γ (PLC-γ) which increases inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate (IP3) to release intracellular calcium ([Ca](i)). Molecular species analysis

Phosphatidylserine (PS) is the most abundant negatively charged phospholipid in eukaryotic membranes. PS directs the binding of proteins that bear C2 or gamma-carboxyglutamic domains and contributes to the electrostatic association of polycationic ligands with cellular membranes. The critical micelle concentration (CMC) can be approximately defined as the lipid monomer concentration at which appreciable amounts (>5% of total) of micellar aggregates first begin to appear in the equilibrium: nM1<=>Mn
