General description

Phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) consists of a small polar head group with fatty acid chains. It is the second most plenteous glycerophospholipid in eukaryotic cells. PE is a non-bilayer forming phospholipid. It is found abundantly in the mitochondria.

Application

Liver PE is suitable for the preparation of liposomes.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) is involved in providing rigidity to the cell membrane via hexagonal phase structures, which promote tight packing of the membrane bilayer formed by phosphotidylcholine. It is also involved in the conversion of prions from the non-toxic to toxic conformation. PE also initiates the autophagosome formation by attaching covalently to the autophagy Atg8 protein.
