General description

Phosphatidylcholines (PC) are the building blocks of eukaryotic membranes. It is also found at high levels in Caenorhabditis elegans lipid extracts. PC is an important component of the mucosal layer of the colon. It is a strong bilayer-forming lipid.

Application

TopFluor® PC may be used to test the incorporation of circulating phosphatidylcholine into the myelin sheath. It may also be used in liposome generation.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Phosphatidylcholine (PC) functions as a surfactant within the mucus to form a hydrophobic surface to inhibit bacterial penetrance. It is used to treat fat embolism. Phosphatidylcholine lowers the levels of cholesterol and triglycerides.
