General description

Phosphatidylserine (PS), a glycerophospholipid, is found in the inner leaflet of the plasma membrane and in endocytic membranes. Dansyl ((dimethyl amino)naphthalene-1-sulfonYL) group produces blue or blue-green fluorescent adduct and thus can be used for various fluorescence based studies.

Application

18:1 Dansyl PS is suitable for preparation of liposomes for sedimentation assays and other fluorometric analysis like FRET.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Phosphatidylserine (PS) is an important cell cycle signaling molecule which contributes to the clearance of apoptotic cells. It is also known to trigger the blood coagulation process acting as a pro-coagulant surface.

Phosphatidylserine (PS) is the most abundant negatively charged phospholipid in eukaryotic membranes. PS directs the binding of proteins that bear C2 or gamma-carboxyglutamic domains and contributes to the electrostatic association of polycationic ligands with cellular membranes.
