General description

Bicelle blend contains 200mg of dimyristoylphosphatidylcholine (DMPC): dihexanoylphosphatidylcholine (DHPC) Pre-Mixed Bicelle (2.8:1, mol:mol). Bicelle is a discoidal lipid aggregate. It is made up of long-chain phospholipid and a detergent. The planar bilayer is generally composed of DMPC, which may have phospholipids with identical chain lengths but differ in the head group. The detergent layer is composed of a short-chain phospholipid like DHPC.
The bicelle blend is designed to aid with the production of high-quality membrane protein crystals. Bicelles can be integrated into standard crystallization protocols, and in contrast to micelles, bicelles maintain the protein in a more native bilayer environment allowing proteins to be captured in a more biologically relevant orientation. Biochem/physiol Actions

Bicelles are used as membrane mimetics for studying membrane-associated biomolecules.

Several complementary physical techniques have been used to characterize the aggregate structures formed in solutions containing dimyristoylphosphatidylcholine (DMPC)/dihexanoylphosphatidylcholine (DHPC) at ratios of < or =0.5 and to establish their morphology and lipid organization as that of bicelles.
