General description
Stigmasterol-d5 is the deuterated form of the plant sterol, stigmasterol. Stigmasterol is called the “good” sterol. The presence of C24 ethyl group and C22 double bond makes it differ from cholesterol.
Biochem/physiol Actions
Stigmasterol is essential for embryonic development in plants and is also involved in the lipid rafts formation. The presence of an additional ethyl group in stigmasterol promotes membrane cohesion.

Insects cannot synthesize sterols de novo, so they typically require a dietary source. Cholesterol is the dominant sterol in most insects, but because plants contain only small amounts of cholesterol, plant-feeding insects generate most of their cholesterol by metabolizing plant

Membranes of composition approaching those found in "rafts" of plants, fungi and mammals were investigated by means of solidstate (2)H-NMR, using deuterated dipalmitoyl-phosphatidylcholine ((2)H-DPPC) as a reporter. The dynamics of such membranes was determined through measuring of membrane ordering or
