General description

Methyl vanillate (MV) occurs naturally in vanilla beans and Pinot noir wine. It is one of the degradation products of Kraft lignin. In vitro studies in mice indicates that MV may be the potent ingredient of Hovenia dulcis Thunb (HDT) extract that is responsible for its ability to increase bone mass, which makes it a potential lead as an anabolic agent for the development of anti-osteoporosis drugs.
