Application

Allyl-modified gelatin can be used in the synthesis of synthetic hydrogels, which can be potentially used in applications such as drug delivery and biosensors.
Gelatin has received significant attention in the biomedical field due to its inherent bioactivity. Functionalized gelatin can be crosslinked with the formation of covalent bonds into highly crosslinked structures, such as hydrogels. Recent literature suggests that radical-mediated polymerized hydrogels may not be ideal for cell and protein encapsulation due to radical-mediated damage, hindered molecular transport, or altered cell–cell/cell–material interactions. Allyl-modified gelatin can be used to form hydrogels with multifunctional thiol crosslinkers via thiol–ene click or Michael-addition reactions.
