Application

Bromocresol Purple is widely used as a vital stain to trace fluid diffusion in the lymphatic system. In addition, the dye is suitable to differentiate dead or live yeast cells. As a pH indicator, Bromocresol Purple is used in microbial culture media, both broth, and agar. In analytical experiments, e.g., to stain carbonic anhydrase isoenzyme on cellulose acetate electrophoresis membranes, bromocresol purple is used.

General description

Bromocresol Purple, also known as dibromo-o-cresolsulfonphthalein, is an acidic dye and belongs to the phthalein and sulphonphthalein dyes group. The dye color changes from yellow to violet at pH 5.2-6.8. The monosodium salt of the dye is 8% soluble in water and 2% in ethanol. Bromocresol Purple, under alkaline conditions, forms a hydrophilic, moderately sized dianion that is purple.
