General description

Aluminum iodide (AlI3) is a strong Lewis acid that is used as an electrolyte additive in electrochemical energy storage and conversion devices.

Application

Aluminum iodide can be used as:
  • An electrolyte additive for the pretreatment of Li metal electrodes. The addition of AlI3 provides a durable Li interface with high Li cyclability.
  • A homogeneous redox mediator for rechargeable Al-CO2batteries with high discharge voltage and a high capacity. These secondary batteries are promising rechargeable systems for future grid energy storage applications.
