General description

Sulfur trioxide is an oxide of sulfur that is released during the combustion of sulfur bearing fuels. It can be prepared by the oxidation of sulfur dioxide in the presence of vanadia catalyst.

Application

Sulfur trioxide may be used in the synthesis of methane sulfonic acid (MSA) by sulfonating methane. it may also be used in the synthesis of fluorinated β-sultones by reacting with fluoroolefins.
