Application
Potassium hydride can be used for following applications:
- Deprotonation: As a strong base, potassium hydride effectively deprotonates hydroxyl groups of monomers, generating alkoxide ions. These ions facilitate the ring-opening polymerization of monosubstituted oxiranes.
- Strong Base in Williamson Ether Synthesis: It is employed to generate alkoxides from alcohols, which subsequently react with alkyl halides to form ethers.
- Reducing Agent: Potassium hydride can reduce hindered boranes and borates to trialkyl borohydrides. It also facilitates the reduction of ketones and alkyl halides.
- Alkylation and Enolate Formation: It aids in the formation of enolates from ketones, which can be utilized in one-pot alkylation-cyclization reactions.
