General description
Lead(II) oxide (PbO) is an industrially important metal oxide with strong absorption cross sections, high carrier mobilities, and conductivities. It is widely applied in the field of storage batteries, dielectrics, gas sensors, pigments, and paints.
Application
Lead(II) oxide can be used as a precursor to prepare:
- Gamma ray radiation shielding glasses such as GeO2-PbO-Al2O3–CaO glasses.
- Perovskite ceramic materials. For example, it can be used to synthesize lead magnesium niobate, widely applied in the field of electronic ceramics due to its high dielectric constant and voltage stability.

Widely used SiO2-PbO glasses can be a good model for studying electron structure of insulator-metal interface with many Si-O-Pb bonds and eutectic Pb-Si mixture. Gamma-radiation of 60Co with an energy of -1.25 MeV generates efficiently electronic and hole structure defects

This study quantified the effects of lead stabilization by blending lead-containing sludge into glass-ceramics through sintering with aluminum- and silica-rich precursors. Using lead oxide (PbO) to simulate lead-laden sludge under thermal conditions, the predominant PbAl(2)O(4) phase was found at temperatures
