General description

Rose Bengal is the sodium salt of tetraiodotetrachlorouorescein, C20H2O5I4Cl4Na2. It is an anionic water-soluble xanthene dye.

Application

Rose bengal has several microbilogical staining applications including:
  • Conn′s technique for bacteria in soil and Kreyberg′s stain for keratin and mucus
  • counterstaining hematoxylin
  • staining cellular inclusions, together with Bismark brown
