Sibutramine, one of a few drugs approved for long-term treatment of obesity, is a chiral compound. The (R) enantiomer has the desired effect of reducing body weight and food intake, but the (S) enantiomer has the opposite effect: A perfect example of why chiral HPLC is important to pharmaceutical and clinical analysts.
