Biochem/physiol Actions
促红细胞生成素（EPO）是一种糖蛋白激素，对于促红细胞生成祖细胞增殖产生红细胞（RBC）至关重要。肾皮质中的肾小管周围成纤维细胞是成人EPO产生的主要部位，尽管脾脏、骨髓和肝脏有助于产生EPO。在胎儿中，肝脏是EPO产生的主要部位。另外，EPO在某些细胞保护活性中起作用，例如抗凋亡，抗氧化剂和抗炎反应。 缺氧诱导因子上调EPO表达。在少数贫血病例中，EPO表达随血红蛋白浓度降低而增加。EPO的产生减少是慢性肾脏疾病中贫血的原因。循环中的内源性EPO抗体（抗EPO）是多种疾病中贫血的原因，例如人类免疫缺陷病毒（HIV）感染，丙型肝炎病毒感染，系统性红斑狼疮。EPO的功能获得性多态性导致家族性红细胞增多症。
