Biochem/physiol Actions
甘氨酸由连接氨基和羧基基团的单个碳分子组成。盐酸甘氨酸（Gly·HCl）能够液化天然壳聚糖，也有助于制备再生壳聚糖膜。它可作为渗透保护剂。甘氨酸可作为蛋白质的柔性连接单元，还可用于形成螺旋。游离甘氨酸可能在组织中对缺血、缺氧和再灌注具有保护作用。在在败血症、关节炎、成人呼吸窘迫综合征和其他炎症性疾病领域，甘氨酸已成为潜在治疗方法的研究对象。
甘氨酸作用于受体可使氯电导增强。与大脑其他部位相比，它在脊髓中的浓度最高。但它可作用并别构激活兴奋性受体N-甲基-D-天冬氨酸(NMDA)，在大脑中引起兴奋性传递。
