谷氨酰胺合成酶催化氨和谷氨酸转化为谷氨酰胺。星形胶质细胞内,其以相同的45 kDa亚基构成的八聚体形式存在。谷氨酰胺合成酶的功能是脑氨的解毒治疗。在神经递质谷氨酸的代谢调节中也有重要作用。由于谷氨酰胺合成酶在细胞代谢中具有多种功能和重要性,因此催化活性和合成均受到高度调节。谷氨酰胺合成酶的活性受腺苷酰化作用的控制。其活性在受阿尔茨海默氏′病影响的大脑的大脑皮层中降低,特别是在老年斑附近。在葡萄糖剥夺的条件下,它也会降低。在体内缺血或培养物缺氧期间,谷氨酰胺合成酶的表达水平增加。
