实验方法

铵态氮 (NH4-N) 部分以铵离子形式存在，部分以氮形式存在。两种形态之间存在pH依赖性平衡。在强碱溶液中，铵态氮几乎全部以铵形式存在，它可以与次氯酸根反应生成单氯胺。该产物又会与取代苯酚形成蓝色吲哚酚衍生物，该衍生物可通过光度法测定。由于空白试剂的固有黄色，测量溶液会由黄绿色变为绿色。

此方法类似于EPA 350.1, APHA 4500-NH3 F, ISO 7150-1, 和 DIN 38406-5。
