凝胶上样溶液在电泳期间可用作跟踪染料。染料具有轻微的负电荷，并且与DNA的迁移方向相同，从而使得用户可以监测分子在凝胶中移动的进程。迁移速率随凝胶组成而变化。上样前用样品进行1：6稀释。
应用

在聚丙烯酰胺凝胶上，二甲苯氰基可与大约450-460bp的DNA共迁移，而溴酚蓝与15-100bp的DNA共迁移。在0.5-1.4％琼脂糖凝胶上，二甲苯氰基可与4kb dsDNA共迁移，而溴酚蓝则与300bp dsDNA共迁移。
