Headshot of Nisan Irem Cetingök with yellow background

We spoke to Nisan Irem Cetingök, an undergraduate at Middle East Technical University, Turkey. She shared with us her work in treating type 1 diabetes.

“…the fundamental organ that researchers should focus on is the brain.”

I’m working on possible treatments for type 1 diabetes and determining whether we can cure patients in their pre-diabetic stage. I believe the fundamental organ that researchers should focus on is the brain.

“Being a type 1 diabetic patient myself, I know how challenging it is to live with this chronic condition.”

My family, friends and teachers inspire me to strive for my goals and dreams. As an undergraduate student, the key is to be disciplined and persevere through my studies, allowing myself to fail and not give up. Being a type 1 diabetic patient myself, I know how challenging it is to live with this chronic condition so the thought of helping other patients motivates me.
