Advancements in Clinical Nutrition: Targeting Hyper-homocysteinemia with B-vitamins

WEBINAR

Date: Tuesday, October 24, 2023
Time: 8:30 am PDT, 11:30 am EDT, 5:30 pm CEST

Numerous chronic illnesses cause a deficiency of B vitamins due to low intake, malabsorption, or polymedications. Deficiency of the B vitamins can cause life-threatening signs and symptoms and worsen disease prognosis. Folate, vitamin B6, and B12 are co-factors needed for cell renewal, methylation, antioxidant capacity of the cell, and normal homocysteine metabolism.

High concentrations of homocysteine are toxic to the body and they predict frailty, morbidities, and all-cause mortality. Lowering homocysteine in chronically and critically ill people requires a combination of the three B vitamins. Methylfolate can lower homocysteine and avoid unmetabolized folic acid in the plasma of chronically and critically ill people.

In this webinar, you will learn about:

  • Folate, B6, and B12 essential nutrients for cell renewal and functions
  • Homocysteine as a friend and a foe
  • Hyperhomocysteinemia, a global nutrition marker in hospitalized patients
  • Avoiding unmetabolized folic acid in critically ill patients
  • Disease history and polymedications: determinants of vitamin deficiency
  • Why we need to lower homocysteine?
  • Effectively lowering homocysteine by the B vitamins
